What God Prunes Us With

God prunes His people with purpose. He uses His Word, His Spirit, and His grace to cut, clean, strengthen, and mature us.

Psalm 119:9 says, “How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your word.” Verse 11 says, “Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You.”

The Word speaks to the heart. It gives divine direction and clarity about what needs to happen.

• Hebrews 4:12 describes it like a sword that exposes the heart and truth.

• Jeremiah 23:29 says it is like fire and a hammer. James compares it to a mirror.

• Psalm 119:105 calls it a lamp and a light.

• Ephesians 5:26 shows it as water that cleanses.

DL Moody said, “This book will keep you from sin, and sin will keep you from this book.”

God also prunes us by His Spirit.

John 16 says the Holy Spirit convicts of sin, righteousness, and judgment. The Spirit of truth guides us into all truth.

Conviction is to the spirit what pain is to the body. Pain is an indication that something needs attention. Conviction shows us where something is wrong and calls us back to surrender.

Refusing the conviction of the Holy Spirit is refusing pruning and maturity.

God also uses grace.

Titus 2 says the grace of God brings salvation and teaches us to deny ungodliness and worldly lusts, so that we live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age.

Grace strengthens the inner man. Grace teaches us how to live. Grace helps keep old branches from growing back. Grace pushes us to become zealous for good works.

Some temptations from the past lose their grip so deeply that they are not even a thought anymore. That is the work of grace.

The Father prunes because He wants fruit.

His Word speaks. His Spirit convicts. His grace strengthens.

Our response is surrender.
