The True Vine

John 15 gives us one of the clearest pictures of what it looks like to be a true disciple of Jesus.

Jesus said, “I am the true Vine, and My Father is the vinedresser.”

This connects directly to what Jesus has already been teaching. He is in the Father. We are in Him. He is in us. This is union with Christ language. We are not disconnected people trying to produce spiritual life on our own. We are branches connected to the Vine.

A branch only lives because it remains connected. The life of the vine flows into the branch. The strength of the vine supports the branch. The fruit of the vine appears through the branch.

That is the picture Jesus gives us.

He says, “Remain in Me, and I will remain in you.” Then He makes it even clearer: “Just as no branch can bear fruit by itself without remaining in the vine, neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in Me.”

This is one of the main markers of discipleship. True disciples remain. They stay connected to Jesus. They accept His words. They obey His commands. Their life begins to show evidence that they are joined to Him.

Jesus also says, “Apart from Me you can do nothing.”

That statement should settle our striving. Spiritual fruit cannot be forced through human effort. Real fruit grows from real connection.

The goal is not to look attached to Jesus from a distance. The goal is to remain in Him until His life is seen through ours.

That means Christianity is not casual association. It is vital union.

A branch cut off from the vine may keep its shape for a moment, but it has no life flowing through it. Jesus did not call us to look alive. He called us to remain in Him and bear fruit.

The Father is the vinedresser. Jesus is the true Vine. We are the branches. Disciples stay connected.
