Pruning is Not Punishment

Many people resist pruning because they mistake it for punishment.

God’s pruning is not random. It is the work of a Father who sees what we cannot see. Without pruning, we never fully live in the life God designed for us.

Hebrews 12:1 says, “Let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.”

Some things are sin. Other things are weight. Both can slow us down. Both can keep us from running the race God has placed in front of us.

People often ask, “Why is God taking this from me?” That question can miss the intention of God. He knows all. He sees what that thing is doing to your heart, your habits, your thoughts, and your future.

Isaiah 55:8-9 says, “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways,” says the Lord. “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts.”

Trust His omniscience.

A new nature needs new habits. A new life needs new patterns. Some relationships, places, and actions belong to the old life. God is not saying we are better than people. God has better for us.

Pruning makes us more useful for Him.

2 Timothy 2:21 says, “Therefore if anyone cleanses himself from the latter, he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified and useful for the Master, prepared for every good work.”

God is most interested in your spiritual growth. Everything else follows that.

Jeremiah 17 says the man who trusts in the Lord is like a tree planted by water. Heat comes, drought comes, yet the leaves remain green, and the fruit does not cease.

That is the life God is forming in you.

So receive salvation. Embrace God’s pruning. Surrender the relationship, habit, thought pattern, attitude, or action the Holy Spirit has been convicting you about.

Invite God to prune what needs to go.

He is preparing you to bear more fruit.
