Invited Into the Dance

Jesus said in John 14:20, “When I am raised to life again, you will know that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you.”

Jesus is not describing a distant relationship. He is describing union.

The theologians have a word for what Jesus is talking about. They call it perichoresis — the eternal dance of the Trinity. The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit move together in perfect love, perfect unity, perfect timing, and perfect agreement.

And the stunning claim of the gospel is that, through Christ, you have been invited into that dance.

Think of something like the Russian waltz. It starts off simple. You can see each person clearly. You can follow the movements. But then it begins to speed up. Everyone is moving in perfect rhythm. Every step has purpose. Every turn has timing. Every person is connected to the movement of the whole.

At some point, you are no longer focused on who is who. The whole dance looks like one perfect movement.

That is a picture of what Jesus is revealing. The Father is in the Son. The Son is in the Father. And now Jesus says, “You are in me, and I am in you.”

This is not casual Christianity. This is not Jesus being added onto the side of your life. This is union with Christ. This is being brought into the life, love, purpose, and movement of God.

A marriage requires the same kind of unity. Two people cannot move together if one is always stepping away. There has to be shared allegiance, shared movement, shared commitment, and shared direction.

And here is the truth: it is not ever God who steps out.

If there is distance, He did not create it. If there is disconnection, He did not abandon the dance. Jesus came to bring us in, and He is faithful to keep moving toward us.

So what does this mean for us?

• If Christ is in me, I am never alone.

• If Christ is in me, temptation is not my master.

• If Christ is in me, I can pray with confidence.

• If Christ is in me, my past is not my identity.

• If Christ is in me, I can overcome.

• If Christ is in me, what can I not accomplish?

The gospel is not just that Jesus saved you from something. It is that Jesus brought you into something. You have been brought into Him. You have been joined to Him. You have been invited into the life of God.

So stop living like you are alone.

Step back into the dance.
